Abstract

7843. Russow, H. March 29. Rigging; sails. - The sails are hoisted and reefed simultaneously or independently by means of lifting-gear, the ropes of the sails being guided over drums and pulleys which can be engaged with or disengaged from the lifting - gear. The main-sail a is wound up on the boom b, which is connected to the shaft @ of the lifting-gear by a cardan joint d. The rope i for the main sail is wound on a drum w<1>. The top sail k is wound on a rotatable shaft l carried by the yard m and may be hoisted or reefed independently of or in conjunction with the sail a by means of winding-gear w<2>. The fore-sail s and jib s' are adapted to be wound up on tubes t, t' threaded on wire ropes u, u' and rotated by endless ropes passing round pulleys v, x and v<1>, z'. The main-sail is connected to the mast by eyelets 4 attached to the edge of the sail, being threaded on a rope 7 placed in a longitudinal groove 3 in the mast. The eyelets are kept in place by plates 5, 6. The luff tackle for directing the sail is connected with the boom b by a flexible shackle 9 so as not to prevent the sail a from being wound up on the boom.
