Abstract

7598. Kempson, E. W. E., and Morse, J. A. V. March 27. Logs. - The speed of a ship is obtained by measuring the difference between the pressures at the widest and narrowest parts of a tube c, which is of the kind used in a ' Venturi ' meter, and is attached to the ship below the surface of the water. In Fig. 1, a represents one of the bottom or side plates of the ship, between which and the tube c is a distance-piece h. The tube c is provided with tubular projections c, f, g, which pass through the skin of the ship and are secured by nuts j, the tubes e, f being connected bv means of tubes m, n to one or more pressure gauges. An air-pump or the like is employed to force air through the tube r and through cocks s into tubes t, the lower ends of which dip into oil or other liquid contained in chambers v, the upper ends of these chambers being in connexion with the tubes m, n. The rate at which air bubbles through the vessels v can be observed. In a modification, the tube c is towed instead of being fixed to the ship.
