Abstract
7310. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Horne, J. March 23. Mountings. - Relates to coupled elevating- gears, for two or more guns, of the kind described in Specification 4890/07. The invention consists in the provision of hand-actuated gearing for effecting the adjustment of the elevating-pinions necessary to correct for muzzlevelocity differences between the coupled guns, and for operating indicators which are graduated to show the adjustment necessary for any range with a given muzzle-velocity difference. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a gun-mounting showing the elevating-gear and indicator, and Fig. 4 shows part of the transverse elevating- shaft C of one of the coupled guns, to which shaft the pinion C<1> is connected by an inclined or spiral keyway K as described in Specification 4890/07. The elevating-shaft C has a wormwheel C<2> rotatably mounted thereon. The worm-wheel is provided with an internallythreaded sleeve c<2> which screws onto a sleeve c<1> connected by a flanged collar c to the sleevepart S of the pinion C<1>. A lug on the sleeve c<1> slides in a guide in the gun-platform B<Î> and prevents rotation of the sleeve. When, therefore, the worm-wheel C<2> is rotated by a worm d<2> on a shaft d, driven through bevelgearing by a hand-wheel D, the sleeve c<1>, and with it the pinion C<1>, are moved along the shaft C. The extent of the adjustment is indicated by a pointer D‹ on a rotatable dial D' driven by the shaft d. The worm-wheel C<2> may be mounted on a shaft parallel to the elevating- shaft, and moves the pinion through a fork or cross-head traversed along the worm-wheel shaft by screw-and-nut gearing.
