GUN SIGHTING DEVICE.
Application filed. April 21, 1925, Serial No. 24,805., and in Germany August 14,1924.
The invention consists in means for obviating the effect of inclination of the trunnions, in the case of wheeled carriages with an inclined position of the wheels, which avoids the above-mentioned drawbacks.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings as applied to a sighting device with an indicating pointer.

By rotating the hand-wheel a the graduated arc Z) and with it an indicating mark 0 is adjusted. A pointer (Z which is connected by a parallelogram rod 6 with the trunnions remains in its original position. It the gun barrel is raised by the elevating gear until the marks 0 and cl are again in coincidence, the sighting angle set on the tangent scale is imparted to the barrel.
By means of the knurled thumb piece 7", the angle of sight is set by adjusting the sight to the angle of elevation corresponding to the range. The indicating mark 0 is thereby moved. In order to set the barrel to the angle of elevation, the marks 0 and 61 will be again brought into agreement by adjusting the barrel by the elevating gear.
In a known device for the purpose of obviating the inclination of the trunnions, the telescope is moved about an axis, parallel to the barrel, crossing the axis of the tangent scale and rotatable about the latter.
The rotation about the axis parallel to the barrel is effected by a worm gearing mounted externally to the axis of the tangent scale on the casing of the tangent scale. Also, in the arrangement according to the invention, for the same purpose the axis of the tangent scale crossesand is rotatable about an axis parallel to the barrel. The
movement of the telescope about this axis with the parts 011 which it is mounted is, however, not effected by a gear arranged externally. to the axis of the tangent scale, but by an ad" isting mechanism which lies in the s or the tangent scale.

It the construction had been such that the link n did not partake of the movement of the tangent scale, and an angle of 90 was imparted to this scale, the axes of the pin 1) and of the link a would coincide in the horizontal plane. It will be noticed that in this case the adjusting mechanism which includes such link, could no longer perform its functions.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1- 1. A sighting device for guns including a barrel and trunnions therefor, comprising a pin the axis of which is parallel to the axis oi said barrel, a tangent scale rotatable about an axis crossing the axis of said pin at right angles thereto, and adjusting mechanism for compensating the sighting device for an inclined position of said trunnions, including a spindle the axis of which coincides with the axis of said tangent scale.
2. A sighting device for guns including a barrel and trunnions therefor, comprising a telescope, a pin the axis of which is parallel to the axis of the said barrel, a tangent scale rotatable about an axis crossing the axis of the said pin at right angles thereto, and adjusting mechanism for compensating the sighting device for an inclined position of said trunnions, said ad'usting mechanism comprising a screw-threa ed spindle of which the axis coincides with the axis of the tangent scale, a bush coaxial with said spindle, a nut engaging with said spindle and constrained to slide longitudinally along said bush and means by which the longitudinal movement of the nut in said bush causes said telescope to rotate about the axis of said pin.
3. A sighting device for guns including a barrel and trunnions therefor, comprising a telescope, a pin the axis of which is parallel to the axis of the said barrel, a tangent scale rotatable about an axis crossing the axis of the said pin at right angles thereto, and adjusting mechanism for compensating the sighting device for an inclined position of sai trunnions, said adjusting mechanism comprising a screw-threaded spindle the axis of which coincides with the axis of the tangent scale, a bush coaxial with said spindle, a nut engaging with said spindle and constrained to slide longitudinally along said bush, a carrier for said telescope mounted on said pin, a ring supporting said telescope and inclinable with said carrier and a link pivotally connected at one end to said carrier and at the other end to said nut.
