Abstract

6424. Fieux, J. March 26, 1910, [Convention date]. Gyroscopic apparatus.-In power-transmission mechanism of the kind in which a gyroscope provides an automatic variable-speed gear, the gyroscope is mounted so that its axis is oscillated by the driving - shaft. The oscillating movements due to the resulting gyroscopic action are converted by a ratchet &c. into impulses in one direction. The gyroscope 1 is supported in bearings in a frame 2, one end of which is supported loosely upon a pin 3 upon a crank 4 upon a driving-shaft 5. The other end of the frame 2 is connected by a universal joint 7 to a shaft 6 in line with the shaft 5. The gyroscope 1 is kept rotating by suitable means, such as an electric motor or friction gearing. The effect of the tendency of the crank 4 to oscillate the axis of the wheel 1 is to drive the shaft 6 alternately backwards and forwards. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a detent 9 renders one of these movements ineffective. A shaft 11 is driven by successive impulses from the shaft 6 in one direction through a ratchet 12. If the load on the shaft 11 becomes excessive, or if a brake 10 is applied, the shaft 5 is not stopped, an effect useful with internal-combustion and electric motors. In a modification, provision is made for altering the inclination of the frame supporting the gyroscope. Reversed driving of the shaft 11 may be obtained by the use of two oppositely-acting ratchets.
