Abstract

6145. Gedalius, E. E. March 11. Lids and covers; corner joints etc.; battens, strengthening.-The lid of a box or packing- case for pianofortes &c. is formed in two parts 7, 8 abutting at their inner edges and connected at these edges by eyes 11 with pins 6 attached to the front and top walls of the box, the reinforced outer edges of the parts carrying angle-pieces 13 provided with pins 15 engaging in slot-pieces in the box-ends 12. The lid parts 7, 8 are held together by a slotted bolt 16 and key 20, and the arrangement is such that, when the lids are locked by these parts, the box-walls &c. are braced and drawn together. The bottom, sides, and rear wall are protected against tampering by angle-irons 18 on the strengthening-battens, secured from the inside of the box by screw-bolts 19. The front wall 1 is detachable, and is connected with the bottom by hooks 2 or pins, which take into eyes 3 secured to the bottom. The rear wall may also be detachable. Since the strengthening-battens, arranged as shown, form a frame, the box-walls proper may be made of very thin material.
