Abstract

5179. Simon, J. March 1. Separating by gravity. - Apparatus for separating lighter from heavier particles, such as fine coal from dirt and sand, comprises a vessel in which an upward flow of liquid carries off the lighter particles while the heavier particles pass out by an intermittently-operated valve. The material is fed to a tapering vessel c through a hopper b and water which is admitted through a pipe d issues downwards from the bottom of a pipe m and is deflected upwards carrying the lighter particles to a vessel h where a further separation is effected, the small coal passing to the bottom and being removed at r, while the dust and lighter particles overflow into a gutter u. The heavier particles of sand or dirt escape from the vessel c through a pipe o when a valve e, which is intermittently operated by means of cams, is lifted. The vessel h contains a helical scraper i for clearing the side walls.
