Abstract

103,670. Sepulchre, E. Oct. 20, 1915, [Convention date]. Plant.-In apparatus for separating liquids of different densities, such as petroleum and water, or light solid particles from heavier liquids such as the waste water of factories, the lighter material is first given a supplementary ascensional speed and then the speed of the heavier liquid is diminished by passing through a channel of increasing section towards a discharge conduit at a lower level than that of the lighter material. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower layers of liquid in a reservoir 1 pass through passages 2 beneath adjustable sluice gates 3 to the discharge channel 5, while the upper layers pass along a channel 6 of increasing section having an upwardly inclined bottom, whereby a stipplementary ascensional speed is imparted to the lighter materials. In the section 7 of the channel, the liquids pass in a wide shallow stream to assist the rise of the lighter materials, and then the bottom of the channel slopes down to a passage 10 of larger section and converging upwards to a narrowpassage 9 wherein the lighter materials are concentrated. From this, the lighter materials pass over weirs 11, 12 into a smaller channel 14, 15, 16, 17 similar to the channel 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 wherein further separation is effected, the light materials being discharged by a conduit 18; the heavier liquids from the channels 10, 16 discharge into the outlet 5. A discharge aperture from the channel 10 is formed beneath a partition 22 having a lip 23 that deflects light particles upwards.
