Cores, covering by winding. - In a machine for winding threads of cotton &c. or wires upon a mandrel or former in the manufacture of pneumatic tyres &c., a number of threads &c. drawn from reels, mounted in a circular cage, are passed through holes in guiding-plates so that all the threads &c. are laid simultaneously side by side upon the mandrel. A fabric made of parallel threads solutioned together may be substituted for the separate threads and guided into position by suitable rollers. The mandrel J, Fig. 1, is supported upon flanged rollers j, and is driven by a band G, running round a pulley F<4> provided with spikes F<5> engaging holes in the band G to obtain a positive drive. The pulley F<4>, which is interchangeable to vary the drive, is mounted on a spindle F driven by spur and worm gearing from the main shaft C. The reels of thread are mounted in a cage I driven from the shaft C through one of two trains of spur gearing, which are mounted in a pivoted carrier, so that the direction of rotation of the carrier can be reversed when one laver has been wound. The cage is in two parts, hinged together at i<4>, Fig. 3, and secured by spring pins i<5>, and is supported on rollers K, K<1>, K<2>. The reels of thread &c. are supported upon spindles i<6>, and the threads are led from them through holes in guide-plates i<8> adjustably mounted upon the cross-bars i<3> of the cage. The threads are attached to the mandrel by rubber solution, and one layer is wound, the direction of rotation of the cage is then reversed, and another layer is wound. The tension of the driving-band G is adjusted by pulleys L, L<1> mounted upon the right-handed and lefthanded portions of a hand-operated screw l. The mandrel is kept in a central position by two guide pulleys H, H', which take the thrust due to the tension of the driving-band and are independently adjustable by hand-wheels h, h<1> operating screws h<3>, h<4> on which the pulley standards are mounted.
