Abstract

1872. Smith, E. W., and Walter, C. M. Jan. 25. Gas burners; burners, mounting and adjusting. -The gas nozzle or nozzles 2 of a high-pressure burner are adjustably mounted, preferably by means of a bracket 9, in front of the larger end of a conical or other gradually tapering passage 3 having an apex angle 2 of 60 degrees or thereabouts and communicating directly with a furnace or other heating-chamber where the gaseous mixture is expanded and burnt, the pressure of the gas being such that the flame is situated some distance from the nozzles. The gaseous mixture is preferably supplied to the heating- chamber in a tangential stream. The passage 3 may be of circular, elliptical, square, or other cross-section, and is formed in the furnace wall or in a separate burner body. In the construction shown, the bracket 9 is made in one with the burner body, and the tapering passage 3 is provided with a ring of refractory material 13 at its front end. The nozzles are fixed in the required position by set-screws 11. The burner body may be made of refractory material.
