Tobacco.-The leaves are stripped on a drum which is made in two parts 2, 3, Fig. 10, and is provided with upstanding cutting-flanges 7, 8, across which the leaf is transversely stretched by means of the belts 14 in order to remove the crease which is generally present in the stem or midrib. The stem is cut away by a cutter 9, which projects between the flanges 7, 8, and has sharpened edges. The belts 14 constitute with a series of narrow belts the driving-means for the drum, which they nearly surround. When a revolution is completed, the drum automatically comes to rest to enable another leaf to be fed to the drum in a position to be superposed accurately on the leaf or leaves previously stripped so that the stripped leaves are booked, and as the drum is driven by contact with the belts, no creeping of the leaves occurs through the increasing diameter of the drum and leaves, and the tension of each belt is maintained uniform by means of weighted rollers 18, Fig. 2. In order that the drum may be automatically stopped at the end of each revolution, it carries an arm 43, Fig. 6, having a pin 44 which engages at the proper time with a plunger 48 carried by a pivoted latch 45, which may swing between stops 46, 47. The engagement of the pin 44 with the plunger 48 lifts the rod 49, which throws off a clutch on the driving-gear. To re-start the machine, a treadle 53, Fig. 2, is depressed, causing the lever 52, Fig. 6, to withdraw the plunger 48 and allow the clutch, which is spring-controlled, to fly back into gear. The machine may be stopped at any time by depressing a treadle connected to the lever 40, Fig. 2, which throws the clutch out of gear. To remove the completed book of leaves, the front driving-roller 20, which is mounted in a framing, is lowered by means of linkage 27 and handle 29.
