Abstract

486. Colombier, M. F. de R. de. Jan. 7. Toy flying-machines; propelling.-In a flapping-wing device applicable to aerial machines and to flying toys in which the wings are adapted to oscillate on a central longitudinal axis C, the flexible material stretched between two ribs A, A<1> of each wing is warped during the flapping motion by the use of cranks B, B<1> set at different angles on each driving-shaft M, M<1> to actuate the ribs A, A<1> through connecting-rods L, L<1> respectively. The shafts M, M<1> may be rotated in opposite directions through bevel - gearing from a motor - driven shaft O, or, in the case of a toy machine, may be rotated by twisted rubber bands F', Fig. 2, a handle N being provided on the shaft O for winding up the bands. An elastic cord K, connecting the wings and passing under the stay D, helps to return them to their lower position. The toy may have the form of a bird, the body being covered with paper, goldbeaters' skin, or fabric.
