Abstract

381. Kitchen, J. G. A., and Storey, I. H. Jan. 6. Regulating delivery by dash-pots &c. - The piston of a feed-pump is connected to a piston or diaphragm, which, when the water-level in the boiler rises too high, checks the motion of the pump by withdrawing water from the boiler and redelivering it through a restricted passage. The piston-rod 10 of the feed-pump C, D, Fig. 1, is connected to a piston 11 in a cylinder A, which is in communication with the boiler through pipes 6, 8 opening at the proper waterlevel. Water is drawn into the cylinder through non - return valves 2, 3 in the branched end of the pipe 6, and is redelivered by the pipe 8 through valves 4, 5 which have a restricted lift. A cock or valve restricting the bore of the pipe 8 may be provided in place of the valves 4, 5. Lever-actuated pumps. - When the pump is actuated from a continuously-operating engine, the engine is connected to the pump-rod 13, Fig. 2, through a block 14 adapted to slide on the rod and held between springs 18, 19 pressing against collars 16, 17.
