Description

"1,629 U55 May 17, 1927. M' D. SMITH BOILER GONTROLVDEVICE Filed Sept. 13. 1924 Patented May 1 SMITH, or CASPER, WYOMING, ASSIGNOR OE Ross, or FORT WORTH, TExAs.
MARION DEE BoILER-CONTRO'L DEVICE.
Application led September 13, 1924. Serial No. 737,615.
This invention relates to boiler control devices, and more particularly to a device of this character adapted to control the supply of feed water to the boiler.
An important object of to provide a device in addition to cont-r water to the boiler,
the invention is of this character which, olling the supply of feed also controls the supply of fuel to the boiler, so that in event of the water becoming dangerously low y boiler this fuel supply is cut olf.
A further object of the in the invention is to piovide a device of this character in -which the control of the feed water supply is obtained by the control of the steam supply to the feed water pump and not by any conti-ol of the feed of any water either to or from the feed water pump,
it having been found by experiments that this results in a steam bound pump,
off valve is employed Ain the suction particularly where the cutline, as
it must be unless dangerous pressure is'to be brought to bear against the heads of the steam end of thev pump.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple iii its construction and operation, which may be readily applied, and.
which will be dui'ab These and other le' and eliicient in service. objects I vattain by .the
construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illus tration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure l is a side water control elevation showing a feed device constructed and 'lconnected in accordance with my invention, a portion ofv the control being broken away;
.Figure 2 is a vtransverse sectional view therethrough.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings,
the control consists of a vertical float chamber 10 having in its lower end an inlet 11 and fin its one side of this lpump removable, as indicated at 13, so that the' upper end an outlet 12, chamber being made ioat maybe inspected and repaired when necessary. At'th'e o pposite side of the chamber a reduced triangular extension 14 is rovided having its chamber and the side Walls having at its apex 15 and in of such apex a pair of bearbase abutting the ings receiving a shaft 16, these bearings being of the packing Upon the shaft Wi type as illustrated at 1"?.
thin the extension 14 is ltionary ONE-HALE To CLARENCE E.
mounted the hub end 18 of an arm 19, the
opposite end of which is vprovided with a iioat extending into the fioat chamber 10.
y'lhe ends of the shaft project beyond the provided with an adjustable weight 21 and p the opposite end thereof is connected with a balanced cut-ofi' valve 22 located in the steam line to the feed water pump. Upon the opposite end of the shaft 16 is secured one end of an arm 23, the opposite end of which is operativey connected with the latch 24 of a latch valve 25 located in the fuel line to the boiler.- v a The operation of the device, when connected as above and properly adjusted, is as follows: As long as the water in the boiler remains at the proper level, ,the ioat is staand neither of the valves 22 or 25 are vin any way affected. .As the Water falls below the proper level, a'steam line valve is opened causing the pump to come in operation and supply feed Water to the boiler. In event the pump fails or for any other reason the boiler water continues t0 lower, before I it reaches the dangerous point the latch valve boiler closed. It will thus be seen that all danger in operation to the boiler on account of failure ofy the water thereof is eliminated, the feed water pump at'ordinary times operating to supply the Water and upon failure of the feed water pump the fires of the boiler being extinguished. I
It will be obvious that the type of valves employed is' capable of a considerable range of change and modification Without materially departing from the spirit of my invention, and I accordingly to such specific structure as hereinbefore set forth except as hereinafter claimed.
I claimz- In combination with a boiler having a fuel feed line and a feed Water pump supplying water to the boiler, a chamber arranged exteriorly of the boiler connected with the boiler above and below `the VWater line thereof, a float operating Within the chamber, a shaft rocked by the rise and fall of the float, a feed line for the feed Water pump, a cut-o valve in said feed line, un adjustable connection between seid shaft and said valve closing the valve upon eleva- 10 tion of the float, a self-closing latch valve in 4the fuel line to the boiler, and means operatively connecting the Valve and said shaft operating to release the latch of the latch valve and permit the latch valve to close upon a predetermined lowering of the float Within the chamber.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
