Abstract

Filaments, attaching; filaments, supports for. -A filament 3 is strengthened at the point of attachment b y s u rrounding it by a helix 2 of a resilient refractory material such as drawn tungsten or molybdenum. In the form shown, the filament, which may be of tungsten, is passed through the helix 2 into a hole in the flattened end of a leading-in wire 1, which may be of copper, and after the helix has been brought against the wire, the parts are united, for instance by arc-fusion, which may take place in hydrogen or the like. The parts may be introduced on a support into a glass bell, where the wire 1 is caused to engage a notched rod forming one electrode, and is then touched by a graphite rod forming the other electrode, which is immediately withdrawn to strike the arc. A loop filament so mounted may be supported in a lamp by engaging a coil of a resilient helix attached by a glass rod to the bulb-tip. The helix may consist of drawn tungsten or molybdenum which softens when hot and yields if the filament is too tightly strained.
