Abstract
28,277. Niblett, J. T., and Electrolytic Apparatus Syndicate. Dec. 5. Cells; electrodes; electrolytes, treating non- chemically; fibrous materials, treating.-Apparatus for making bleaching-solution comprises one or more shallow inclined trays 3 in which are electrodes 5, 6 arranged transversely to the flow of the electrolyte. The electrodes in a tray may be in one row parallel to the bottom, or in two rows so as to form a sinuous passage for the electrolyte; they may be of circular, square, triangular, or other cross-section. Grooved supports for the electrodes may be formed on the floor of the tray. The electrodes have volute-metal or other heads which are screwed into external omnibus bars and thereby compress rubber washers against the opposite sides of the tray. The flow of electrolyte into a tray or into the uppermost tray of a series is regulated by a valve 4, operated by an electromagnet or solenoid in series with the electrodes, and may take place through a rose or sprinkler, preferably having larger holes above the higher end of the tray than above the lower end. The electrolyte may be cooled in or between the trays. A diaphragm is placed between the rows of electrodes if it is desired to collect the products from one or both electrodes separately.
