Rain gauges.-In recording rain gauges in which a collecting- bucket A and a recording-pen are mounted at opposite ends of a lever turning about an horizontal axis, the bucket being automatically emptied b y inversion each time it becomes filled, the bucket is prevented from prematurely emptying by mounting on it a roller G which, as the bucket descends, bears against a cam surface H, inversion of the bucket being impossible until the roller has cleared the bottom of this surface. When the bucket commences to right itself, the roller G catches against the corner h of the cam surface and keeps the bucket inverted until completely empty. The arm M carrying the recording-pen is hinged at m to the arm B and to counteract its tendency to fall away from the drum K when in the lower part of its path an arm N carrying a weight N' and a short piece n<1> is mounted on an horizontal pivot at the end of the arm B. When the pen is in the lower part of its path the tendency of the arm N to become vertical causes the piece n<1> to press against the arm M and keep the pen in contact with the drum. When the pen is in the upper part of its path, its own weight keeps it pressed against the drum, and the piece n<1> exerts no pressure. Cams O<1>, O<2> are provided to lift the arm M off the drum if the pen exceeds its ordinary limits of motion.
