Abstract

Hulling. - Palm-nuts &c. are subjected to rubbing to remove the pericarp, by guiding them across the surface of a roughened rotary disk or cylinder. The disk 3, which, if of metal, may be roughened by punching from below, is mounted on a rotary vertical shaft 2. The fruit, fed through a hopper 6, passes by centrifugal force along an almost radial channel 7 the sides of which are spaced from the disk to allow the pericarp to pass out while the kernels are retained. The angle the channel makes with the radius may be adjustable. The pericarp is thrown beneath the flange of the cover 8 into a trough 10 and removed by a sweeper 11, mounted on and operated by gearing 12. The kernels leave by a passage 7<a>. The channel 7 may be replaced by one of zigzag form or by a spiral channel which, according to the Provisional Specification, may be formed of a single spiral strip. The friction may be increased by roughening the channel - walls, or by putting pressure on the material under treatment by means of leather, cloth, bristles, wire, chain, leaf-metal, or pneumatic cushions arranged in the channel. A roughened cylinder may be used, across the surface of which the material is conducted by means of a channel or worm conveyer.
