Abstract

26,441. Monge, Viscount J. de. Nov. 14. Steering and balancing; planes, arrangement of.-The supporting-planes of a flying-machine are mounted to move about two parallel axes transverse of the machine, and are controlled by springs. The planes A are pivoted at G to rods B, which are connected to the frame of the machine by blade springs H. Springs E connect the planes behind the pivots G to the rods B at the point M. Springs E<1> are connected to the planes at the points N, and to cords passing around a drum operated by a hand-wheel V, whereby the tension in the springs E<1> can be simultaneously varied for controlling the incidence of the planes by turning them about the pivots G. The springs H tend to move the planes forwards. In a modified controlling arrangement by which the tensions of springs E' can be simultaneously or separately adjusted, the cords connected to the springs are passed around separate drums on concentric spindles. The hand-wheels for operating the drums may be coupled together when the springs are to be operated simultaneously. A tail is provided comprising two inclined planes crossing each other. Toy flying-machines. - In a modified form specially suitable for toy machines, the planes may be connected to the body of the machine by blade springs which replace the rods B and the springs E, H. The blade springs may be extended to form the body or frame of the machine.
