Abstract

Steering and balancing; planes, arrangement and construction of.-The main planes of an aeroplane are altered in incidence in the same or opposite directions by raising or lowering the rear ends of forwardly converging hinges 9, 10 in the planes, a central hinge 6 supported on the fuselage being also provided. A modification is described in which the hinge 6 is omitted. Fig. 2 shows a biplane in which the upper and lower wings are connected together by struts 5. 5<a> and by a single diagonal brace on each side (not shown). The struts 5 are connected by bellerank levers 12, 13, Fig. 3, and right and left hand screws 15, 16 to a sleeve 17 which has a collar 25 connected by a link 24 to a universallymounted lever 21. Lateral movement of the lever 21 moves the main planes in opposite directions, and longitudinal movement moves the elevator through cords 20. A hand-wheel on the sleeve 17 enables the rear edges of both wings to be raised or lowered simultaneously.
