Abstract

25,003. Catchpole, S. Oct. 27. Sweeping-machines.- Consists in the following details of construction of apparatus of the kind in which dust is swept away from roads and drawn by air suction into receptacles. The rotary brushes are disposed at an angle, with their inner ends in contact or overlapping. The outer ends of the spindles are journaled in bushes c carried by supports e furnished with adjusting-blocks bored to receive spindles k, by which they are moved within plates g carried on blocks secured to the frame i. Collars on the spindles resting on guideblocks allow the brushes to pass over obstructions, and the height of the brushes from the ground may be adjusted by the spindles. A bulb bush in which the inner ends of the brushes are journaled is attached to a stem m adjustably screwed to a spindle n, a collar on which rests on a supporting-bridge beneath the framing; a guide-pillar passes within the stem m. The brushes may be simultaneously lifted by coupled levers r acting on collars on the spindles. The brushes are driven through gearing from mitre-wheels mounted by feather-andslot means on the supporting or driving wheels, and may be thrown out of gear by striking- levers. A trailing-wheel 13 with an adjustable spring supports the apparatus at the rear. The dust thrown up is caught in an inverted trough casing which encloses the brushes and conforms to their position. A fan or pump 11 driven from one of the axles extracts the dusty air and passes it into a receptacle mounted on the platform of a wagon. The receptacle shown contains a filtering-compartment with a screen, and a partitioned separating-compartment containing water or disinfecting fluid, the dustfree air escaping at an exhaust 25. The filtering-compartment may be omitted. Dust and mud doors may be provided, and the bottom of the separating-chamber may be constructed as shown.
