Application filed larch 28, 1808. Serial No. 485,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoan Gmmwoon, a citizen of the United 'States, residing at Owensville, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Street-Sweeper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a pertains to make and use the same.
T hls invention pertains to a new and useful street sweeper, and it has for its object to provide a noveland efiicient device of this character, by which the sweepings of a street are automatically elevated through neumatic means and afterward delivered into a suitable receptacle carried by the apparatus.
A further object is to provide an inexpensive structure of this design, in which the rotary brush, as well as the suction pipe, may be raised or lowered, for obvious purposes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the brush ieldably in contact with the street when eing swept, and the pneumatic suction pipe for elevating the sweepings is provided with means of a resilient character, so as to allow the same to easily and readily pass any obstruction that may be in the ath thereof.
The invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out by the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and to the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the street sweeper, showing the novel construction thereof and theelectric motors carried by the frame of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, clearly showing the operative parts in position and in readiness to perform the functions for which they are provided. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the apparatus, clearly illustrating the interior structure thereof.
In regard to the accompanying drawings,

designates the sup orting frame for the operat ng parts of t e ap aratus. This supporting frame is provi ed with the usual traction wheels 2, that is, the rear traction wheels .and the usual front steering wheels 3, which may be steered in the usual way, that 1s, by beveled gear connections 4, with an angularly disposed shaft or rod 5, on whlch the usual hand wheel 6 may be prothe operator of the apparatus.
The axle 7 of the rear traction wheels is provided w1th a pair of sprocket wheels 8, whlch are ositioned adjacent the ends of the axle. ounted in suitable bearings of the frame of the apparatus is a shaft 9, on which at the ends thereof, are sprockets 10, about which and the sprockets 8, chains 11 travel. Also carried by the shaft 9 is a; beveled gear 12 andpositioned forward of the frame of the apparatus are two electric motors 13 and 1 1. The motor 14 has an extended shaft 15, the end of which is supported in suitable hearing, as shown at 16, and the extremity of the said shaft 15 is provided vwith a beveled gear 17, which meshes with the beveled gear 12, as shown clearly in the top plan view of the drawing.
Mounted in suitable bearings 18 of the frame of the apparatus is an additional countershaft. 19, on which is mounted a beveled gear 20 and a pulley 21, about which pulley a suitable belt 22 travels. This belt also travels about the pulley 23 of the pneumatic suction fan 24, which is suitably sup-. ported upon the frame of the apparatus.
The motor 13 is provided with an extended shaft 25, the end of which is mounted in a suitable supporting bearing 26, and upon the extremity of said shaft 25 is a beveled gear 27 which is designed to mesh with the beveled gear 20, mounted upon the countershaft 19.
The extended shafts 15 and 25 of the electric motors 13 and 14: are provided with suitable clutch mechanisms 28 and 29, which are provided with suitable operating handles 30 and ratchet engaging pawls 31, of the usual type. These handles are positioned in close proximity to the operator, so that he mechanism in and out of gear, as will be clearly evident from the annexed drawings.
Extending laterally and curved rearwardly and downwardly, then forwardly is the pneumatic suction pipe 32, which is vided, and positioned in close proximity to -may easily and quickly throw the clutch nected to a lever 47 w p of which is to hold the This hand handle 54 o ratus, the coiled flared, as at 33, .to equal the width of the frame of the apparatus. The forward end of the pneumatic suction pise is disposed beneath and slightl rearwar of the rotating brush 34,.whic is mounted in suitable bearings 35 of the pivotally mounted arms 36, the shaft 37 of this rotating brush is provided upon one of its ends with a sprocket wheel 38, about which a sprocket chain 39 travels. This sprocket cham 39 also travels about a sprocket wheel 40, which is carried by and rotatable with the countershaft 19. The countershaft, receiving motion transmitted from the electric motor 13, operates rush 34, through the medium of the sprocket. wheels 38 and 40 and the sprocket of its arms is pivotally connected to a pitman rod 46. This itman rod 46 is conliich is'fulcrumed, as at 48, to the frame of the apparatus. This lever 47 is provided with a pawl 49,- which is designed to engage teeth 50 of the quadrant 51. This quadrant 51 is secured to and carried by the frame of the apparatus. Pivotally connected to the pawl 49 1s a rod 52, which is connected to a hand grip 53. ip 53 is located adjacent the i the said lever, as clearly shown. Surrounding the rod 52 and positioned between a bracket thereof and a shoulder 55 of the lever is a coiled spring 56, thetendency awl in engagement with the teeth of the sa1d quadrant, as will be clearly evident. When the lever 47 is moved forward of the frame of the appaspring 57 is under tension, as will be understood. This sprin 57 surrounds the rod 42, and is des1 e for the urpose of holding the pivota 1y mounted ame of the rotary brush downward toward the street, as is evident from the drawing.

In a street sweeper, a framework, a pneumatic suction fan carried thereby having a pneumatic suction ipe extended laterally therefrom, curve I rearwardly and downwardly and then forwardly, said framework having pivotally mounted arms, a rotary brush journaled in said arms, means for simultaneously operating the pneumatic fan and the said brush, means for yieldingly holding the said arms downward, means for raising and lowering the pivotally mounted arms, driving mechanism for the apparatus, a receptacle for receiving the sweepings of the street, and antifrictional rollers carried by the pneumatic suction pipe.
