22,188. Richmond, G. F., White, J., and Gray, F. Sept. 24. Pulp, preparation of.-A machine for cutting and crushing bamboo cane J into short lengths suitable for digestion in the manufacture of paper pulp comprises a stationary box-like casing B carrying a series of inverted V-shaped cutters C spaced apart in its open face, a pivoted box-like casing B<1> carrying a series of similarly-shaped cutters C<1> adapted to fit between the cutters C, and means for rocking the pivoted casing B<1> to bring the cutters C<1> into cutting relation with the cutters C, consisting of a crank-shaft D rotated through gearing E from belt pulleys F, and connected by rods G to a shaft H on the casing. The short lengths of cane pass out of the hollow casings through openings c, c<1>, the joints j being cut off by wide cutters at the ends of the casing, and passing through a separate compartment c<2>. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, two series of movable cutters C<1>, operated by a link-and-rod connexion K, L, are used with fixed cutters C, so that a cane may be cut at each stroke of the rod L.
