Abstract

21,214. Blanc, J. Sept. 12. Sulphurous acid gas for destroying rats and insects is obtained free from sulphuric acid by treatment with a mixture of glycerine and a solution of an alkali. By this treatment, the gas is obtained in a state in which it will not cause any deterioration of objects such as metals, pictures, stuffs, &c. The purification may be effected by washing, or by passage of the gas through porous materials impregnated with the pumping-agent. The invention is particularly useful with the apparatus described in Specification 20,494/09, in which the sulphur is burnt on plates b in a chamber a and the gases pass over baffles f to stop solid particles. The gases pass through a cooler g provided with water-cooled pipes h and with baffles, and the gases leave this chamber and pass into a dustbox l through a strainer k. Baffles m are placed in the dust-box, and the gases pass from this into an expansion chamber n with strainers o, and then into the pump p from which they are directed into the purifying-vessel q, and a cooler r.
