Abstract

20,186. Wedekind & Co., R. April 12, [Convention date]. Sulphurous acid.-The decomposition of sulphates by silica for the production of sulphurous acid is effected economically by mixing with such a quantity of pyrites, that the heat generated by burning the sulphide in a current of air suffices for the decomposition of the sulphate. The process can be carried out in the usual sulphide-roasting furnaces, and the gases may be used for the production of sulphuric acid. For example, a charge of pyrites, gypsum, and sand is thrown on to a layer of ignited charcoal in a converter, and air is blown through the charge from below.
