Tables for setting- out ; stretching by tension.-A wet hide is set out on a plane surface made of boards or the like. to which it adheres in a stretched condition, and upon which it is dried without the use of pins or similar tensioning-devices. The setting-out is done on a table, shown in side and end elevation in Figs. 1 and 2, the top 1 of which is mounted on trunnions 7, and carries the board 3 on which the hide 22 is set out by an operator standing at the higher edge of the table. The board rests against pins 19 inserted in the table at 17, the table top being secured at the required inclination by pins 15 which engage holes 14 in collars 12 on the shaft ends. When the portion of the hide on the table has been set out, the board is removed horizontally, as shown in Fig. 3, and the table is turned vertically. The pins 19 are transferred to holes 18 at the other edge of the table, and the board is placed on the table again with the treated portion 20 of the hide downwards. The table is then turned up again with the edge 18 lower than the edge 17, and the remander of the hide is set out. The board is then removed to the drying-chamber with the hide adhering to it, and the hide may be japanned or otherwise finished prior to its detachment. A small quantity of paste &c. may be used to assist the adhesion of the hide and board.
