Abstract

18,613. Greger, R. Aug. 6. Toothed gearing.-A device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, and vice versa, applicable to steam-engines, naphtha and other motors, &c., comprises a pair of racks 2, 3 on a reciprocatory frame 10 which alternately engage a toothed sector 1 on a fly-wheel shaft 22, a lever 15 on the fly-wheel shaft being provided with a roller 6 at one end and a pair of cams 4, 5 at the opposite end, adapted to cooperate with bridge-pieces 8, 11 on the reciprocatory member to overcome dead-centres and to assist reversals. When, as shown in Fig. 1, the sector 1 is carried out of engagement with one rack 3, the roller 6 bears against one of the bridge-pieces 11 while the cam 5 momentarily bears against the opposite bridgepiece 8 to prevent jarring. When, during the dead-point position of the piston operating the reciprocatory member, the lever 15 and sector 1 are carried round by the momentum of the fly-wheel, the reverse motion of the reciprocatory member is initiated by the cam 4 bearing against the bridge-piece 8, after which the sector 1 engages the rack 2, this action being repeated at each end of the stroke.
