Abstract
18,238. Zeiss, C., [Firm of]. Aug. 14, 1909, [Convention date]. Clinometers; sextants &c.-Instruments of the type in which a mirror is attached to a pendulum are simplified. Five diagrammatic views are described in the Specification of which Figs. 1 and 4 are here selected as examples. Each instrument comprises a holder e and a pendulum divided into two limbs, rotatable relatively to each other about an axis parallel to, as shown in Fig. 1, or coincident with, as shown in Fig. 4, the axis 4 of the pendulum. The mirror consists of a prism c which extends through a portion only of the field of vision. The centre of gravity of the scale limb a is at the point 1, and that of the pointer b is at the point 2. In each case, the instrument is set for an object on the horizon, but the dotted lines show the position of one or both limbs which occur when the instrument is set for an object on the zenith. In cases such as shown in Fig. 4, where the axis of the pendulum coincides with the axis of rotation, the weights of the limbs have the inverse ratio of the distances of the centres of gravity from the axis of rotation. To the limb to which the prism c is not attached may be fitted a subsidiary mirror d<0> for extending the field of vision. Figs. 6 and 7 show a constructional form, based on the diagram in Fig. 1, in which the axial points 2, 3, 4 are coincident. The adjusting - shaft k carries a pinion k<0> in gear with the sector l of the scale limb rotatable on the pendulum shaft b<0>, to which is fixed the cross b<1> carrying the vernier. The prism c‹ is carried by the pendulum shaft.
