Abstract

17,785. Dick, F. B. July 26. Zinc oxide and sulphate.-Siliceous zinc ores, such as Broken Hill ore, are agitated with water and then with sufficient sulphuric acid to sulphate the zinc, the total amount of water being about that required to dissolve all the zinc sulphate produced, and the whole after drying is heated to a temperature high enough to decom- 'pose soluble sulphates other than zinc sulphate, and to render the silica insoluble. The zinc sulphate is then leached out, and the zinc recovered by electrolysis, the spent electrolyte being used again, or the zinc sulphate may be ignited to obtain oxide and sulphur oxides which are returned to the process. According to the Provisional Specification, the sulphur oxides are converted to sulphuric acid, or are used in an alternative process to replace the sulphuric acid, the sulphur oxides being passed over the heated ore until zinc sulphate is produced for recovery as above.
