[Cognate Application, 27,975/10.] Capsules, applying. - Ends of cans &c. are attached by means of a metal strip c, Figs. 8 and 10, which is first secured to the can by means of a bead or the like d, and then has its upper edge e curled over the lid a'. The upper edge of the can has a groove b, Fig. 8, or a bead y, Fig. 10, into or under which is sprung a bead &c. d on the lower edge of the strip c, the upper edge e projecting vertically as seen in Fig. 8. The upper edge of the can and the strip are then supported by the holders f, which are moved down by the cam m and lever l and, engaging the bevelled ring o, are forced in to engage in the groove b, Fig. 6, or under the bead y, Fig. 7. By the operation of a second cam, the head r is forced down, and this holds the lid a<1> by means of the projection x, Fig. 7, or the spring plunger s, Fig. 5, and also curls over the edge of the strip c, as shown in Fig. 10 by means of the grooved shoulder w. In the case of a tin with a beaded top edge, a plain strip may be used, and its lower edge forced in under the bead by the holders f. Packing z may be inserted in the joint.
