Varnishes.-A varnish or protective coating for straw hats, oil paintings, &c. consists of trinitrocellulose or triacetylcellulose dissolved in methylated ether, and diluted with amylalcohol, nitrobenzol, or other solvent. Amyl or methyl silicate and castor oil may be added. To obtain an opaque coating, a composition containing calcium or barium carbonate, zinc sulphide, barium sulphate, sodium casein, formaldehyde, and glycerine may be added. To render the coated articles pliable, they may be passed between hot metal plates or rollers, which may be coated with olive, castor, or other oil. According to the Provisional Specification, the varnish may be used for the production of artificial skin.
