Abstract
11,693. Billiter, J. May 11. Cells; diaphragms; electrodes; electrolytes, treating non-chemically.-Cathodes 10 in the form of bars or strips are enclosed in porous tubes 12 for leading away gas without disturbing the main body of brine or other electrolyte, which is fed into a bell 2 near the anode 7 and descends past the cathodes to an outlet 3. Glass or other impermeable strips may be placed just above or below the spaces between the tubes 12. The caustic soda or other product diffuses from the tubes 12 to the surrounding liquid under the influence of the current. The tubes 12, Fig. III<a>, may be of asbestos cardboard or fabric, and may be stiffened by a coating of cement, or stretched by a heavy rod 14, Fig. III<b>, by a spring wire, or by the elasticity of cathodes consisting of bent strips of wire netting. The tubes are closed at their lower ends, and traverse an auxiliary chamber 15. Traces of hypochlorite can be destroyed by passing a small part of the current through an auxiliary cathode, say a pipe 4. The electrolyte may be heated. With a pressure of 3¢-4 volts, a current density of 5 amperes per square decimetre may be employed.. Specifications 5694/93 and 24,058/99 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a.) comprises also the following subject - matter. The diaphragms may be rendered gas - tight by rubbing on to them barytes, burnt gypsum, or other powder, by applying gelatine solution containing these materials or salt and hardening by formaldehyde or alum, or by allowing liquid containing salts of calcium or magnesium to act on the alkali in the diaphragms without passage of current. The diaphragms may have the form of inverted troughs. The heating-means may be below the level of, but not directly below, the anode; the vertical distance between the'heating means and the anode is at least one centimetre but is less than half the distance between the electrodes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
