Feeding sheets.- In a machine for cutting up counter-check and like books which are manufactured in the form of a strip, means for feeding the book strips to the cutters comprises travelling chains i provided with strip - engaging dogs j, which are pivoted on the chains i and are rocked into an inoperative position as they pass over sprocket-wheels i2 by bolts k<1>, cams l<1> serving to reset the dogs as they pass over wheels i<1>. Delivery apparatus.-In a machine for cutting u p counter check and like books which are manufactured in the form of a strip, means are provided for delivering and collecting in order the cut strips. The strips to be cut are received in the cutting position by a series of chutes t, t<1> shown in dotted lines, each of which comprises a lower guide t carried by a rock-shaft u and an upper spring-controlled guide t<1> pivoted to vertically reciprocable rods v. After the cutting operation the chutes are lowered to the position shown in full lines, thereby discharging the books on to a travelling band p. A stop x serves to keep the upper guide t<1> horizontal in its upper position. From the band p the books fall in vertical position between a horizontally reciprocated fence y<1> and a vertically reciprocable prong fence z, the fence y<1> serving to pile the books against a movable fence z<2>, and the fence z serving to retain them in vertical position when the fence y<1> retires. In a modification, the books may be received from the band p by the pockets of curved revolving vanes adapted to deliver them in numerical sequence on to a travelling band or platform.
