Abstract
8821. Weule, A. F. H. April 12. Mariners' compasses.-An azimuth fitting for determining deviation consists of a frame A having two graduated sectors B, C and centrally mounted on the glass of the compass bowl. In use, the radial cross-wire 18 is set to indicate the known variation on the sector B, and the instrument is turned till the wire also reads S on the compass. At apparent noon, the shadow of the wire 4 should then fall on the zero of the scale on the sector, any divergence from it giving the deviation. Alternatively, the North and South may be got by observation of the sun or a star in the mirror 7 attached to a subsidiary frame 5 beneath the sector C, which is then read to give the deviation.
