7948. Skeffington, A. April 1. Bed-lifts.-In a device for handling invalids, of the kind comprising a frame adapted to be raised vertically by means of cables operated by worm-gearing &c., the frame E, E<2> rests upon cables D which preferably run through the tubular side-bars E, E, so that the frame automatically adjusts itself to an horizontal position. T h e cables are secured at one end to drums C' on a spindle S, mounted in brackets w h i c h are clamped to an end frame of the bed, and pass over loose pulleys D<1> on a parallel spindle D<2> carried by brackets D'. The other ends of the cables may be secured to the members E or to the bedstead, or, if the pulleys D<1> are dispensed with, to the spindle D<2>. When the spindle S is operated by worm-gearing C<2>, C<3>, the cables are wound upon the drums C', and the frame is raised, being guided by rollers E<3> which engage with bars G. A second winding-device may be used in conjunction with the spindle D<2>. The side members E of the frame are connected by detachable lengths of webbing or slats. The spindle S carries a roller C, which may be used for operating a sheet H for moving the patient horizontally, as described in Specification 10,012/09. The sheet H can be detached from the roller when the spindle is rotated to raise the frame E', E<2>. The Provisional Specification states that the end members E<2> of the frame may be dispensed with, and that one end of the draw-sheet may be fixed, so that the sheet may be used to elevate the patient. The lifting-apparatus may be used in conjunction with a separate supporting- frame, instead of on a bedstead.
