7726. Testrup, N. March 30. Catalytic processes and apparatus. - Fats, fatty oils, fatty acids, &c. are mixed with a finely-divided catalyst, such as nickel or palladium, and the mixture is exposed in a state of minute division, for example, spray, in a suitable chamber to an atmosphere of hydrogen or a gas containing free hydrogen. The material may be repeatedly treated in the same or in a series of chambers. The catalyst is separated from oil, for example, by filtration, and any soap that. may be formed is removed by washing with acid. In the preferred form of apparatus, the mixture of oil and catalyst is pumped into a mixing and heating vessel g, into which hydrogen also is supplied by a pipe k under high pressure. The oil mixture passes by a pipe l to a vessel o, and is sprayed through a nozzle p. The hydrogen passes to the vessel o through a pipe m fitted with a reducing-valve n. The operation is repeated in a series of vessels s. Specifications 1515/03 and 23,977/09 are referred to.
