Abstract

7195. Martin, G. C., and Baldwin, J. P. March 22. Vibration - dampers. - Relates to frictional vibration-dampers as applied to the springs of automobiles &c. in which the motion of the spring is impeded in one direction only. According to the invention, one member, comprising a disk with ratchet-like mechanism, is attached to the frame, and the other member, comprising a casing and brake-drum, is attached to the axle. The raised portions 10 of the member attached to the frame form abutments for springs 20 acting on toggle-pieces 19. These toggle-pieces bear against adjustable blocks 23, on which they may move angularly as indicated by the dotted lines, and at the other end engage by tongues 21 with plates 18 bearing on shoes 16, which on their outer faces frictionally engage the drum 7. The full lines indicate the position of the parts when the casing moves counterclockwise, corresponding to the downward movement of the axle. On the return, the positions are as indicated by the dotted lines, the friction being relieved. Adjustment of the frictional force is made by a tapered nut 27 which presses the blocks 23 outwards radially.
