Abstract

Pencil - sharpeners. - Relates to pencil - sharpeners of the kind in which the pencil is held against rotation by a chuck or holder moved forward during the cutting by a spring, the holder being in some instances provided with spring- pressed gripping- members which also effect the correct centring of the pencil. The holder comprises a plate 4<a> moving on guides 3 carrying one or more springs 8 which bear on a cover 9 secured to the plate 4<a> to force it towards the cutter x. Sleeves 7 may be fitted to the plate 4<a> to prevent it from jamming on the guides 3. The pencil y passes through holes in an end plate 5 and in the plate 4<a>, and is held by jaws 9<a> pivoted to the latter and operated by a spring-actuated rotatable disk 12 mounted on an extension 13 on the plate 4<a> and having spiral slots 11 engaging pins 10 on the jaws 9<a>. Finger plates 14, 17 are provided for turning the disk 12. Two guides 3 only may be employed, the plate 5 being then curved to clear the pencil; and the holding-plate 4<a> may be adjusted along the guides 3 before insertion of the pencil by bringing it up to an adjustable threaded or slotted sleeve on one of the guides. The end of the pencil rests in a tapering V-shaped slot in a block 18 fitted at the end with a turntable plate 24, against which the pencil point may abut to adjust the fineness of cut; a stop may be provided for the plate 24. The block 18 is adjustable both longitudinally and laterally by the engagement of slots 21, 23<a> thereon by projections 20, 23 on rotatable pins 19, 22. The plate 24 may be held on by a headed screw, against which head the pencil point bears when the plate 24 is turned aside. For thick pencils the block 18 is shortened, and two plates, separated by a collar, may be employed to give three positions.
