4898. Newton, P. A., [Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co.]. Feb. 26. Halogenanthraquinones are produced by treating anthraquinone or halogenanthraquinones with chlorine in presence of sulphuric acid, advantageously in presence of a chlorine carrier such as iodine. By this process can be prepared 1 : 4 : 5 : 8- tetrachloranthraquinone from anthraquinone, or 1-chlor-, or 1 : 5-dichlor-anthraquinone; hexachloranthraquinones from, for example, 2 : 6-, and 2 : 7-, dichloranthraquinones ; pentachloranthraquinone from 2-chloranthraquinone; 1-brom - 4 : 5 : 8 - trichloranthraquinone from 1-bromanthraquinone ; and 2-bromtetrachloranthraquinone from 2-bromanthraquinone. Tetraarylaminoanthraquinones are produced by heating 1 : 4 : 5 : 8-tetrachloranthraquinone with arylamines.
