Letter-spacing mechanism.-Relates to escapement mechanism of the kind comprising a ratchetwheel controlled by fast and pivoted dogs on a rocker. The pivoted dog 18, Fig. 5, is movable radially relatively to its pivot for carriage release, for which purpose it is slotted over a pivot screw 19 on the rocker 12. The inner position of the dog 18 is determined by a screw 22, the head of which is large enough to cover the dog in its outer position and to press the dog in its inner position against the rocker 12. A spring 20 moves the dog 18 into its outer position against a stop 23, comprising a lever held down against a rigid stop 26 by a spring 25, so that it yields to permit further movement of the dog 18 when the ratchetwheel is rotated backwards on the return of the carriage. Carriage-releasing arrangements and brakes.- The dog 18, Figs. 4 and 5, is provided with a pin 27 for engagement by a bail 28, which is provided with an arm 30 for actuation from the usual trough-shaped member 2 of the carriagereleasing connexions through a suspended link 32, and with a second arm 31 for actuation from the tabulator shaft 33 through a lever 35. A brake disk 42, for engagement with an enlarged face 43 of the carriage-driving pinion 4, is operated by a lever 41 provided with an adjusting-screw 39 for engagement by an arm 38 on the lever 35.
