[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Axial-rolling; die-rolling; rolling tubes; rolling-mandrels. - A ball-head machine for rolling gun-barrels, rods, &c. has the pass adjusted by an arm engaging a templet to give a taper; the mandrel is carried in a tailstock traversed from a lead-screw and controlled by tappets. The ball-head k, Fig. 3, is traversed through a divided nut n from the lead-screw m; the races g controlling the pass are adjusted by a screw h connected to an arm i<2>, Fig. 2, engaging a templet on a curved arm j<1>, a scale h<3> indicating the pass. The mandrel o is free to rotate in a tailstock p; a pinion splined on the lead-screw and connected to the tailstock drives a pinion s, from which pinions p<2>, p<3>, engaging racks on the bed, are driven through a crown-train, the clutch q<1> being operated by a hand-wheel t<1> or by tappets u<1>, u, Fig. 2, engaging a bowl t<2>. The tailstock may be locked by a stop-pin v engaging one of the racks, and, in a modification, may be recipro. cated by an hydraulic press.
