Abstract
944,572. Making drills; altering physical properties; working at specified temperatures. T. W. WLODEK. March 21, 1960 [Aug. 24, 1959], No. 9831/60. Headings B3A and B3V. A process for producing a hardened hollow steel member comprises hardening one of the surfaces of a hollow steel billet of at least four inches in thickness having a hole therein of at least one inch diameter, the hardening being effected at an elevated temperature, e.g. 1500‹ to 2300‹ F. in the presence of carbon and/or other diffusion hardening element until a hardened layer of from 0.015 to 0.080 inch thick is formed and subjecting said member to mechanical deformation under pressure at a temperature of 1500‹ to 2100‹ F. to effect considerable reduction in cross-sectional area to produce a hollow steel member such as hollow drill steel, thereby effecting grain and structure refinement and improving the physical properties of the hardened surface layer. The hardened surface may be further treated by pressing shallow grooves at spaced intervals on said surface, said grooves being between one thousandth and one sixteenth of an inch in depth. This treatment is carred out at room temperature or below the recrystallization temperature of the metal. It may also be carried out above the recrystallization temperature provided it is followed by over rolling with a smooth roller at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature. The pre-diffusion impregnation treatment by, for example, chromium, molybdenum, cobalt, columnium, titanium, boron, silicon, aluminium, uranium, vanadium, tungsten, nickel and their compounds, provides a surface alloy layer which is refined by the final plastic deformation. After completion of the pre-diffusion treatment the billet is cooled and cleaned and an austenitic manganese steel rod is inserted into the centre hole of the billet prior to the final rolling operation. Specific examples of the process are given in the Specification. Specification 815,958 is referred to.
