Abstract

3452. Brownson, J. H. Feb. 12. Bag filters; filters with horizontal filtering partitions or layers; filters, cleansing; filtering- media, charging and discharging. - A filter, especially suitable for water, syrups, or other liquid containing little solid matter, is continuously cleaned by suction. The filter consists of a layer of fabric, which is arranged, with or without an intermediate layer of gauze, upon a grooved plate, which may be made in sections, or on a plate surmounted by a corrugated sheet, and is covered with a perforated plate. Kieselguhr may be forced into the perforations on to the fabric. Moving over the perforated plate is the cleaning-device which, when the filter is cylindrical, as shown in Fig. 1, takes the form of a pair of pistons e, e fitted with rings. The pistons are fixed to a hollow shaft f which is reciprocated by a crank and connecting-rod at one end, and leads into a vacuum chamber at the other. Apertures f<1> connect the vacuum to the space between the pistons, causing a backward flow of liquid which carries the solids to the vacuum chamber. Instead of this arrangement, scrapers g may be employed, with or without a piston, and co-operating with collars g<1> to cause the suction to operate only on the forward side of the device. Suction may be dispensed with in this form. If the filter is flat, the cleaning-device consists of a reciprocating or rotary hollow body open to the filter surface and communicating with a hollow rod or shaft. The grooves in the lower plate lead to outlet springs, to which taps may be fitted. In one form, the plate may be supported on brackets projecting inside a casing. The cleaning-device may be utilized to apply or remove the kieselguhr, or the whole filtering-surface may be removable. The rod or shaft passes through glands at the end of the filter, so that pressure may be employed.
