Abstract

1855. Gyrostatic Turbines, Ltd., and Holroyd, T. H. Jan. 25. Working-fluid supply; reversing.-Apparatus for generating products of combustion for driving turbines and other motors comprises two or more cylinders divided by connected reciprocating pistons 2, 3, Fig. 2, into combustion chambers 6, 9 and air - compressing chambers 7, 8. An explosion in one cylinder 6 expels the products of combustion in the opposite cylinder 9, compresses air from the chamber 7 through a non-return valve 17 into a reservoir, and draws air through a valve 16 into the chamber 8. The chambers 7, 8, instead of acting directly as air-compressors, may operate as hydraulic force pumps for compressing air into the reservoir, which supplies a chargemeasuring device 30 of the kind described in Specification 1859/10, which in turn supplies the charge through suitable valves to the combustion cylinders. The conduits leading to the forward and reversing turbine nozzles 13 are controlled by reversing-valves 19 operated by link-work 22, 23, Fig. 1. The cut-off valves 18 are actuated by the pistons 2, 3 striking alternately a rod 25, which is connected by links 28, 29, 24<1>, and pins 24 with the valves. In a modification, Fig. 10, the charge - measuring devices 30 are arranged in extensions of the main cylinder, and the gear 25 is employed also to actuate the feed-valves supplying the charge to the combustion chambers. A water-jacketed division wall 53 is provided and fitted with the necessary suction and delivery air-valves. The cylinder is water-jacketed and provided with a liner.
