Electro - magnetic actuation.-The magnetic circuit of an electro-magnetic regulator or starting - switch is provided with air - gaps adapted to be successively bridged by magnetic pieces which bridge the fixed contacts of the switch. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3. employed to vary a resistance in the armature circuit of a shunt-wound motor, the coil 1 of the switch is arranged in parallel with the armature 21 of the motor, and the field 22 is placed across the mains. The magnetic circuit of the switch consists of a core 2, plate 11, and pieces 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, the distance between the pieces 7, 8 being variable. Between the pieces 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, resistances 16, 17, 18, 19 are placed. When the main switch 23 is closed, the piece 12 is first attracted, thereby bridging the air-gap between the pieces 3, 4 and shortcircuiting the resistance 16. The piece 13 is next attracted, and so on, until all the resistances are short-circuited. The resistances need not be connected to the fixed magnetic elements, but may be connected to contacts adapted to be engaged by brushes on the movable pieces.
