Abstract

104. Bruce, W. J. W. Jan. 3. Actuating valves.-A lift valve for controlling a whistle is operated by a piston to which steam is admitted intermittently, through a valve operated by a turbine. This valve may be rotary and actuated by gearing, or may be a lift valve actuated by a cam rotated by the turbine; the valve can also be operated by hand. The whole of the parts are carried by and combined with the main valve casing. The turbine 20, Fig. 1, through gearing 31, 35 rotates a valve 10 connecting steam ports 16, 23 to supply the piston 4, which operates the lift valve 2. A valve 11 also connects these steam ports and is actuated by a hand-lever 37. In a modification, the turbine rotates a cam 44, Fig. 4, which operates a lever 37 to actuate a lift valve 42; the lever 37 can also be operated by hand. A known drainage valve 47 may be used with either modification.
