Abstract
30,405. Thomas, C. C. Dec. 30, 1908, [Convention date]. Anemometers.-The flow of gas through a pipe is measured by adding heat at a known rate to the moving current of gas, and determining the rise of temperature thereby produced in the gas. In the apparatus shown, the gas passes through a chamber containing resistance grids 26 heated by a known amount of electric energy. The grids are mounted in grooves in a porcelain lining 22, and are connected in series with an electric generator 13. Electric thermometers 29 measure the difference in temperature of the gas before and after heating, and from this difference the flow is determined, the specific heat of the gas being known. Moist steam or other vapour is first superheated in the same or another apparatus. In a modification of the heating-chamber, a number of spiral grids connected in series are mounted on rods in a cylindrical chamber, flanges projecting from the inner wall of the chamber between adjacent grids, to ensure that liquid carried by the gas shall come into contact with the grids. The apparatus may be connected in shunt with the main gas-pipe so that a known proportion only of the gas is measured.
