29,231. Fairweather, W., [Mergenthaler Linotype Co.]. Dec. 14. Magazines, escapements, and keyboards for type-bar making machines. Machines in which multiple-character matrices are released by keys and arrested by stops set by the keys are adapted for two or more founts by arranging the corresponding matrices for the several founts in alternate magazine channels for two founts, or in groups of three or more adjacent channels for three or more founts, and providing means for connecting the keys at will with the respective matrix - releasing devices. For two founts, the usual latch-releasing lever 20, Fig. 1, connected with the corresponding key E, instead of acting directly on a single latch 17, as described in Specification 27,630/97, controls either of two adjacent latches through an interposed finger B, which is stepped as shown in Fig. 6. The fingers B are pivoted on a slide b adjustable by means of a shift-key b<1>. The key b<1> is yieldingly locked in set position for either fount by a latch b<3> containing a spring- actuated plunger b<4>, which returns the key after a temporary shift.
