Abstract
29,052. Saunders, S. M. Dec. 13. Roller mills.-The grinding-rollers or other parts of apparatus used in connexion with the milling or grinding of flour are supplied with air cooled under compression, to prevent the extraction of moisture from the flour. Air from the milling room in which the grinding-machinery is situated, or from elsewhere, is cooled while under compression in apparatus a and is then passed by a pipe b to an expansion engine or turbine c, where it performs useful work. The cold air leaves the engine by a pipe d, and is distributed to the nip of the rollers e, f by a perforated pipe d<1>. Or the rollers and their axles may be made hollow and the cold air passed through them. Instead of, or in addition to cooling the rolls, the feed-shoot F may be cooled by a perforated pipe g', which is placed beneath the bottom plate f<1> and connected to the engine c by a pipe g. The engine c may be used to drive the rollers. Or the flour itself may be cooled before it reaches the grinding-rolls. The cold air used may be moistened, and other cooling-fluid may be used.
