26,980. Haley, S. Nov. 20. Rotating-tool machines.-The work-rest over which the hides pass to the rotary tool for buffing, whitening, shaving, &c., consists of a set of rollers. The construction is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 applied to a swivelling support a mounted in a swinging arm b, which is moved by a pedal in the usual manner with regard to the knifecylinder d. The narrow pressure-roll h is carried in a frame f, which is pivoted in the support a at e and carries a spindle i. This spindle carries end brackets j, in which are pivoted the rollers k forming the work-rest. For cleaning the pressure-roll h, the brackets and spindle i are turned in the direction of the arrow, and locked in the inoperative position by means of thumb-screws n, bearing in slots o in the limbs f<1> of the frame f. For treating very wide hides, an auxiliary side support, Fig. 4, may be used, consisting of a stand s, of adjustable height, having a head t containing a shaft provided with end brackets j, in which are pivoted work-supporting rolls k. The shaft is rotatable in the head through an angle determined by slots i<1>, which accommodate the screw u, by means of which the work-support is locked at the required inclination to the tool d.
